Beware: none of this is playtested!
In a previous post I outlined my collection of Tau minis. This is a condensed version of that list:
- 1 XV8 Commander
- 1 XV8 Crisis suit
- 3 Stealth suits
- 12 Fire warriors
- 12 Kroot
- 1 Devilfish
- 1 Hammerhead
- 2 Broadsides
- Assortment of drones, mostly of the gun variant
That's what I have to work with, and what follows is what I came up with:
HQ
Commander Helios (194)
Iridium battlesuit, Shield generator, Plasma rifle, Fusion blaster, Flamer, 2 Gun drones
Crisis Bodyguard Team Helios (136 111)
(Iridium battlesuit is apparently only 1 per army... maybe this is better as an elite choice XV8 then)
Elites
Stealth Team (130)
Shas'vre + 2 Shas'ui, Markerlight and target lock, Marker drone, Homing beacon/Positional relay, 3 Burst cannons, Bonding knife ritualTroops
Firewarrior Team (175)
Shas'ui + 5 Shas'la, Pulse rifles, Bonding knife ritual, Devilfish with gun drones, point defence targeting relay and disruption podFirewarrior Team (70)
Shas'ui + 5 Shas'la, Pulse rifles, Bonding knife ritualKroot Carnivore Squad (99)
Shaper + 11 Kroot, Kroot rifles, Sniper roundsHeavy Support
Hammerhead Gunship (145)
Submunitions, Disruption pod, TL Smart missile systemBroadside Team (140)
Shas'vre + Shas'ui, TL Heavy rail rifles, TL Smart missile systems
For a grand total of 1064 points (if I counted correctly)
The Stealth team takes up position closer to the enemy, preferably in cover and near a flank. They sit there, providing some marker lights and burst cannon fire to whittle down infantry.
The Kroot outflank near an objective or just to harass the enemy's flank. The Stealth team optionally take a positional relay to help the Kroot arrive where necessary, this I will need to test in battle of course.
The Commander and Bodyguard (try to) hop from cover to cover and seek out their natural prey: vehicles or heavy infantry that has already been weakened by long-range fire. Another possibility is that they deep strike near the Homing beacon of the Stealth team.
I'm not quite sure about the Helios layout of the XV8s... Fireknife (Plasma rifle/Missile pod) is a safer option, due to higher range... but I think they are protected (T5, 2+/4++, drones) enough to get up close... still need to be careful 'though.
The broadsides and hammerhead are there for long-range fire support, obviously.
Tactics
The Firewarrior teams sit on/near the home objective, preferably in cover and within 6" of each other, so they can lend each other some support overwatch fire if needed. The Devilfish is mobile cover and can possibly whisk away a Firewarrior team to retreat or capture another objective if possible. The Stealth team takes up position closer to the enemy, preferably in cover and near a flank. What are your findings?
