Tau advancement (in painting)

Shas'la S'mik in all his singular glory... but see those shy dudes at the back?
Welcome back dear readers!
Today, we will review the progress we have made in our painting session of yesterday... admittedly, the painting session wasn't long because World of Tanks beckoned me to get some xp...

But...

I continued on the 2 Firewarriors and Gun drone I started last week during the PPP session and after an hour and a half or so of painting (and waiting for paint to dry), I finished them!

Yes that's right, they are that fast to paint!
Ok, I actually only needed to do the detailing and the base, as the armor and undersuit were already done last week, but still... I think it's pretty great.
I even did the markings and added a little more detail to the original S'mik.

Also, I tried a lighter color for the base rim, but the black works best in my opinion.

So this proves the color scheme is:

  1. Replicatable so they all look pretty coherent (I dare you to spot where S'mik is in the above picture and to spot the differences between him and the other two Firewarriors... in person, it's a bit easier)
  2. Fast to paint
  3. Good looking
  4. Fun to paint

While we're at it, here, have another picture:

And another one:

I will break out the airbrush this evening to give these guys a coat of varnish so I can add the static grass to their bases. This army will be based as soon as it's painted! (not so much with my Angels of Desctruction... I wait to base them until I get a whole bunch painted... and then I just forget)

As you already may have noticed, I'm really happy with how these guys turned out. I'll have to see how the colors work on larger models, but we'll burn that bridge when we get there. As Dries pointed out, I may need to do some airbrush magic...

Next up on the painting station is some more Firewarriors and a Stealth Suit... and I got a cool idea for that Stealthy sucker... watch this space.

Disclaimer: The pictures suck... I was trying to get better quality pics, but the white background actually made it worse... anyone have any tips for photographing mini's in a not-so-well-lit environment with a phone-cam?

What do you think? Will the color scheme look good on Battlesuits and Tanks as well?

  1. Well, S'mik is obviously the fish on the right. But I cheated - he's not holding his pulse rifle up as high as the other 2 :-D (paint wise, I can't tell from the picture).

The scheme looks very good and I think it will also work on the suits, they have enough edges and recesses for the washes to do their thing (IIRC) I'm not too sure about the vehicles, but I have no airbrush experience at all.

Nice idea to base them as you go along, it's a dreadful job but it doesn't get any nicer by "saving it up to do it in one go" as you've found ;-)

    1. Nice spot. It is indeed the dude on the right. The color of the base is slightly different, the undersuit is highlighted differently and as you said, he's shooting from the hip.

Vehicles with the airbrush... we'll see how that goes, now won't we ;)

Yeah, I found out the hard way, if you don't base them right away, they don't get based... there's always a more flashy job to do.

I just managed to do the varnishing... haven't had time to apply the static grass, so no pictures today...
