<br />
<br />
Hi guys,<br />
<br />
Long time no see.<br />
<br />
I'm currently a very busy man, so I don't exactly have a lot of time to spend on blogging.<br />
However, hobbywise, I haven't been sitting on my behind... come to think of it, that's exactly what I've been doing!<br />
<br />
So I've finished my first Kill Team.<br />
These guys are a warband of Death Guard who stayed loyal to the Imperium. This group of survivors of the Istvaan III atrocity banded together and still fight together since that day.<br />
<br />
More pictures on the other side...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><b>Sergeant Febron</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguC2fxjp1q1m_u_W5D1b5oDXKzxGEXyUG-iLBEAAnltjfuh_acT9K4UYcy98x-zpJFudmlwzaCQYHZtIzR7od2fFog8OkQiFWnHxeJHY6QQeegoNQIvoAbi0Cl4p0HX9YeyUaIMG-FbpjR/s1600/40k-28.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguC2fxjp1q1m_u_W5D1b5oDXKzxGEXyUG-iLBEAAnltjfuh_acT9K4UYcy98x-zpJFudmlwzaCQYHZtIzR7od2fFog8OkQiFWnHxeJHY6QQeegoNQIvoAbi0Cl4p0HX9YeyUaIMG-FbpjR/s320/40k-28.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
As the leader of this warband, Febron dictates where and when to strike. Even though all team members are survivors from different parts of the XIVth, over the centuries, they all came to respect Febron as their leader.<br />
<br />
<b>Lastheron, heavy weapon specialist</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtEvSROUdnIL5e5rBIe_rr4FrHlA3FpQScayefyutrAXF2dGDFgv4l9av4Fn2WIW5ggr6MsmEaxBOZKxRanC1KxL-ZchQOOueUL8QYVxYXtOGXwVpOX-8fa2o4G4qjFH-FRxvg2kfSujmN/s1600/40k-35.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtEvSROUdnIL5e5rBIe_rr4FrHlA3FpQScayefyutrAXF2dGDFgv4l9av4Fn2WIW5ggr6MsmEaxBOZKxRanC1KxL-ZchQOOueUL8QYVxYXtOGXwVpOX-8fa2o4G4qjFH-FRxvg2kfSujmN/s320/40k-35.jpg" width="278" /></a></div>
Brandishing his favorite autocannon, Lastheron provides much-needed large calibre support for the team. Without him, krak grenades are the only thing that's able to remove heavily armored threats from the battlefield. With his expert shot, nearly anything that becomes the target of his attention is obliterated on sight.<br />
<br />
<b>Chorol, special weapon trooper</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHUIVKF3eh8El4ravsKQHj14XuHychITq5QKdFkfsBhn5J2mnqJpJGBiphLH1GAr-tf_w3sTX4MEW7oG0VCPPBIzH606JC9DHKu5IKZ_oG3vX1GJTnE7dWvWBQS2t5bKthMAVpBUYQy2yf/s1600/40k-25.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHUIVKF3eh8El4ravsKQHj14XuHychITq5QKdFkfsBhn5J2mnqJpJGBiphLH1GAr-tf_w3sTX4MEW7oG0VCPPBIzH606JC9DHKu5IKZ_oG3vX1GJTnE7dWvWBQS2t5bKthMAVpBUYQy2yf/s320/40k-25.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
In the close quarters combat that is favoured by the Death Guard, Chorol's flamer is a weapon of mass destruction. Engulfing threats in a gout of promethium, many a victory has been grasped from the flames of defeat.<br />
<br />
<b>Dengor, combat specialist</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDul-9F-0i74W5kxeF4hpktTRMC8-PqW6DSsu0IUCTH5KT7GdMdCiN-N2RRw4IejQLPX7RjHjA6i2w_0KPHw4g6gJ7LlnTNEAF76dOPSE_madNFxqOjDoWjyrmOsSUMRz8EBAzV64csSBi/s1600/40k-32.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDul-9F-0i74W5kxeF4hpktTRMC8-PqW6DSsu0IUCTH5KT7GdMdCiN-N2RRw4IejQLPX7RjHjA6i2w_0KPHw4g6gJ7LlnTNEAF76dOPSE_madNFxqOjDoWjyrmOsSUMRz8EBAzV64csSBi/s320/40k-32.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
The entire team is armed to handle any threat they may encounter, as dictated by the tenets of the Death Guard. Therefor, standard troopers are armed with bolter, chainsword and bolt pistol. Dengor however, prefers close combat to vanquish his foes, and as a result, has perfected the art of killing with chainsword and bolt pistol. With his killer instinct, he can find and hit any weak points of an enemy using his bare hands if necessary.<br />
<br />
<b>Morbus "thumbless", dirty fighter</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWpTgZ5j_r7Rjk7Q4b5AQ4tVchv-pjf-QzueEdKRwvS5GDOTSwoMDksJLnoVkW6yFthDuKNSKv2seHYwMxxKcnkhyphenhyphenekEvL-3N5-eBoqmsK1f9AkpiOTkqn-DIHJRBKMT8DMfq4R4rWUG_t/s1600/40k-33.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWpTgZ5j_r7Rjk7Q4b5AQ4tVchv-pjf-QzueEdKRwvS5GDOTSwoMDksJLnoVkW6yFthDuKNSKv2seHYwMxxKcnkhyphenhyphenekEvL-3N5-eBoqmsK1f9AkpiOTkqn-DIHJRBKMT8DMfq4R4rWUG_t/s320/40k-33.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
When the situation dictates extreme measures, Morbus is let loose. After losing his thumb while fighting off some hungry Tyranids, Morbus adapted an unconventional fighting style using a backhanded grip on his chainsword.<br />
<br />
<b>Tusson, guerilla specialist</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5Rl3deAgpf1S6m16GUvpdCgQgQesXbGsLlgUMuxZM-seYUdkWiMV8s-BFkleRxTFcXkaQzTy-KRkDEK_wQjJFdnWOVS3Fs6_fkpJhmj3RjmdXQxfWWtm78YxuhJ30JfRZY2gWkDwxK0fe/s1600/40k-31.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5Rl3deAgpf1S6m16GUvpdCgQgQesXbGsLlgUMuxZM-seYUdkWiMV8s-BFkleRxTFcXkaQzTy-KRkDEK_wQjJFdnWOVS3Fs6_fkpJhmj3RjmdXQxfWWtm78YxuhJ30JfRZY2gWkDwxK0fe/s320/40k-31.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
Sneaking up on a target is what Tusson does best, infiltrating an enemy encampment to strike from within. This usually causes a whole lot of confusion, allowing the rest of the team to sweep in and cause maximum damage.<br />
<br />
<b>Vulnux, team vox operator</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUGBe_GY9BgdmfKZf1-e4-mpnjgwFLBwQ5GXwjLBXC-NCqoudGGaj4JHfAauhVS_6uOY7DzQQ11j3A67tkIVAb8XLo4XJlkezJ7ijjBrHa1eTbPlV9ZIzjpDINF2WCN1tow_DFSCFvZeCA/s1600/40k-30.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUGBe_GY9BgdmfKZf1-e4-mpnjgwFLBwQ5GXwjLBXC-NCqoudGGaj4JHfAauhVS_6uOY7DzQQ11j3A67tkIVAb8XLo4XJlkezJ7ijjBrHa1eTbPlV9ZIzjpDINF2WCN1tow_DFSCFvZeCA/s320/40k-30.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
He's carrying massively outdated gear, so the readouts usually make no sense and his vox hails get no replies. His bolter however, is as accurate as ever.<br />
<br />
<b>Haemorag, Graegor and Scophulo</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMOCZC_pn549eTvU7-4arUAgCP88Q5DS_ITtjTaaaS5Y_wTEK_oR_YtmKHWCSCLMdBCyzGUnEWNZ62S-KBIhqEK-zAyzUbeu8CFOi3fqc_ZEaKY169J6IIjnNS9RTfCLUOuctOJYuRnH4X/s1600/40k-34.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMOCZC_pn549eTvU7-4arUAgCP88Q5DS_ITtjTaaaS5Y_wTEK_oR_YtmKHWCSCLMdBCyzGUnEWNZ62S-KBIhqEK-zAyzUbeu8CFOi3fqc_ZEaKY169J6IIjnNS9RTfCLUOuctOJYuRnH4X/s320/40k-34.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>

Hard as nails, like any Death Guard, and equally deadly. Nothing special.<br />
<br />
Thanks for looking. So, my first post, "<a href="http://wtoatw.blogspot.be/2017/01/back-from-dead-death-guard.html" target="_blank">Back from the dead</a>" featured a Chaos Space Marine from the Dark Vengeance boxed set I painted in Death Guard fashion.<br />
<br />
I then decided to assemble and paint a Death Guard Kill Team.<br />
<br />
This is the story so far...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>A Death Guard Kill Team... but I wanted not just any Death Guard... I wanted the Team to represent pre-heresy Death Guard of the 7th Grand Company. Maybe they're even Loyalists... who knows...<br />
<br />
Thankfully, the <a href="https://www.games-workshop.com/en-BE/Burning-of-Prospero-ENG" target="_blank">Burning of Prospero</a> boxed set was recently released, containing Mk III marines, the perfect mark of armor to represent Death Guard, as it's more heavily armored at the front and the Death Guard prefer close range combat and boarding actions.<br />
<br />
So I bought the sprues for 10 models off of someone who bought the boxed set and re-sells the models separately. Imagine my surprise when I saw the 32mm bases marines come with, nowadays!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfH9XB45ukh1hMftbSkaxr-GwpG4ado2tHXhCbDz_YNqUTdORFcf9hs_hrLsLrMYa-UDF-CV_N-PCmAP0auAIHrctiNYD6XR_kn14FFzDrtSYFbT2oxNJA38ZueTtAs_Rt2NWuQ29rZ8mB/s1600/20170201204534_IMG_0972.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfH9XB45ukh1hMftbSkaxr-GwpG4ado2tHXhCbDz_YNqUTdORFcf9hs_hrLsLrMYa-UDF-CV_N-PCmAP0auAIHrctiNYD6XR_kn14FFzDrtSYFbT2oxNJA38ZueTtAs_Rt2NWuQ29rZ8mB/s400/20170201204534_IMG_0972.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Graegor's sexy MkIII backside</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Since then, I've assembled 7 marines, including:<br />
- Sergeant Febron<br />
- Flamer wielding Chorol<br />
- Combat specialist Dengor<br />
- Vox trooper Vulnux (regular line trooper but with cool looks)<br />
- 3 Line troopers: Haemorag, Graegor and Scophulo<br />
<br />
Still needed:<br />
- Dirty fighter specialist Morbus (I could use some inspiration how to model him)<br />
- Autocannon dude Lastheron (Will convert Heavy Bolter to Autocannon)<br />
- Stealth specialist Tusson<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhICB4OFnau5ByN2GEBXBu74F291Ot-sELlNpRsz-yydWMog8qsqrJiG5Vmvf3sXJWFRAu6u90o6cnW_ghkRwwMqiTeCFKRRhQBAClzdCdJlq4MLiGKzbwIylvrRxvCZBDEh596bn7_HRXp/s1600/20170201215437_IMG_0979.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhICB4OFnau5ByN2GEBXBu74F291Ot-sELlNpRsz-yydWMog8qsqrJiG5Vmvf3sXJWFRAu6u90o6cnW_ghkRwwMqiTeCFKRRhQBAClzdCdJlq4MLiGKzbwIylvrRxvCZBDEh596bn7_HRXp/s400/20170201215437_IMG_0979.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Morbus, Graegor and 2 blurry teambuddies.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
And I've been painting as well!<br />
<br />
Chorol, Dengor, Haemorag and Graegor are painted, but as I'm coming up with the painting recipe as I go, some things change over time. The latest change to the color scheme is the tint of green used for the pauldrons, kneecap and part of the backpack.<br />
Previously, this was Vallejo Sickly Green shaded with sepia. Now it's Cayman Green. This color better suits the Death Guard, I think.<br />
<br />
Something else I want to explore with these guys is weathering. I've already added a sponge-applied dark brown stippling which is cool.<br />
What I still want to try: painting on scratches and gashes and using weathering powder.<br />
Yes, all on the same models.<br />
<br />
We'll see how that goes!<br />
<br />
<b style="color: red;">
Weathering. Is it something you do? <br />
Like I said before, Kill Team brought me back into the hobby, and since Death Guard has always been on my to-do list, this was the perfect opportunity for my first Kill Team.<br />
<br />
So I started looking at the Chaos Space Marine Codex (and Traitor Legions supplement) and came up with the following list:<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><b>Chaos Space Marine squad </b><br />
- Death Guard: Relentless, Feel no pain, Fearless, -1 I<br />
- Mark of Nurgle: +1 T<br />
- Veterans of the Long War: +1 Ld, Hatred(SM)<br />

<style type="text/css"><!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--></style><u>Some remarks:</u><br />
- The entire squad has +1 Toughness from mark of nurgle and Feel no pain to make them all very resilient. Fearless ensures they never run off. Watch out though, -1 Initiative makes them slightly vulnerable in assault.<br />
- Autocannon is there to take out light vehicles. First iteration of the list had a Heavy Bolter with split fire, to target multiple infantry models, relying on krak grenades to take out light vehicles. This turned out to be an insufficient reply to vehicles.<br />
- All guys (except heavy Lastheron and special Chorol) carry Bolter, Bolt pistol and Close combat weapon to be as versatile as possible. I prefer this setup instead of giving Febron a power weapon. Also, extra fluff points, since Death Guard are supposed to be armed to counter all types of opposition.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: red;"><b>Any advice for a better list? Let me know in the comments!</b></span>Cheatahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05635052902008247591noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8534108233084050071.post-86965309194335431052017-01-26T12:22:00.000+01:002017-01-26T12:22:33.854+01:00The K-Team - Is Kill Team the answer?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://media.giphy.com/media/bFlqUhHGzNfFK/giphy.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://media.giphy.com/media/bFlqUhHGzNfFK/giphy.gif" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Warhammer, and 40k in my case, is inherently all about "What if I add this or that unit into my army?" This triggers an entire workflow:<br />
1) Theoretical thought about usage and tactics concerning the unit to add.<br />
2) Collect the models required for the unit based on theoreticals of previous step.<br />
3) Assemble the models.<br />
4) Paint the models.<br />
5) Play long game(s) with them, and ask yourself the question "What if I add this or that unit into my army?"<br />
<br />
This gets tedious over time with any army. So what do most players do? Decide to collect another army, of course! And the cycle repeats itself.<br />
<br />
After time, this in itself gets tedious/expensive/time absorbing, causing players (well actually, I'm talking mostly about myself) to quit the hobby and start spending time and money in other pursuits.<br />
<br />
--- Enter Kill Team ---<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><span style="font-size: x-small;">FYI: Here, "Kill Team" means the ruleset introduced by GW in the "Kill Team" boxed set in 2016. There are other variants of Kill Team (Heralds of Ruin, homebrew, ...) to which these thoughts might apply, but don't quote me on that.</span><br /><br /><br />
Part of the reviving of my interest in "the hobby" is due to the potential of "Kill Team" to cut down on the workflow above:<br />
1) Theoreticals are reduced since Kill Team prohibits the use of certain units by rules and the viability of other units or options through points restrictions. (200pts isn't a lot)<br />
2) How many models can you fit into 200pts? That's the maximum amount of models you need to buy.<br />
3) See 2, substitute "buy" with "assemble".<br />
4) See 2, or 3 if you like redirections. Substitute "buy" with "paint".<br />
5) "Army" is done, play quick games with them, ask yourself the question: "What army will I start next?"<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://media.giphy.com/media/l3vR6aasfs0Ae3qdG/giphy.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="264" src="https://media.giphy.com/media/l3vR6aasfs0Ae3qdG/giphy.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This type of workflow makes it easy for players to start and finish a project in a (relatively) small amount of time and for a (relatively) small amount of money, compared to armies that need at least 1500pts (which is considered smallish) to play in a standard 40k battle.<br />
<br />
Thus, the hobby no longer gets tedious as long as you have another Kill Team you'd like to start. Also, the painting hurdle is much lower, because there aren't that many models you need to finish. As soon as you get tired painting a certain color scheme, you can start planning the next Kill Team. (Admittedly, I've already started planning 3 or maybe 4 possible teams to do next.)<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">You talkin' to me?</td></tr>

<br />
<br />
After a hiatus of over two and a half years, I'm back into the hobby!<br />
<br />
What a better way to reboot than painting a Chaos Marine from the Dark Vengeance set.<br />
This guy was already undercoated with black paint and had already received a zenital highlight using an airbrush several years ago. He's spent his time gathering dust (as death guard tend to do) but yesterday I decided enough is enough.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
I broke out the ol' brushes and paints and after checking the paint pots for liquidity, I immediately tossed out all my GW paints. The Vallejo Game Color and Game Ink pots were all fine... rejoice!<br />
<br />
Mind you, they spent almost three years being untouched. The GW pots have manufacturing dates, and those were nearly a decade old!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigmYVhp_Cp6KflLvvB1cyfWu47yFOFK_N3CSPf0wv06MWP_r1CcwSnVezZxGucMzHciXhtsSfkBo4lmM5FZ0K3W2-KOtd5cA8YBF5J70_Gi33gJQ1J8GtxYAlFqnknHZ32LeybFrDbjjRd/s1600/IMG_0634.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigmYVhp_Cp6KflLvvB1cyfWu47yFOFK_N3CSPf0wv06MWP_r1CcwSnVezZxGucMzHciXhtsSfkBo4lmM5FZ0K3W2-KOtd5cA8YBF5J70_Gi33gJQ1J8GtxYAlFqnknHZ32LeybFrDbjjRd/s400/IMG_0634.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Anyway, the Death Guard have always appealed to me, including the dirty white/green color scheme. So I decided to ditch my homemade nurgle marines 'Legion of Rust' and opted to go full-on Death Guard for the color scheme.<br />
<br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;">You may notice that my photography skills have been upgraded as well, since last time I was here. That's because I needed another hobby (read 'money-pit') in the time I didn't spend dabbling in 40k. So I'm now an amateur photographer in addition to being plastic-addicted.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span>
I've watched a good couple of "how to paint" videos on Warhammer TV, and that's actually how I got my mojo back. I'm not saying I'm going to post here regularly, but at least I'm going to try doing some hobby-stuff once in a while.<br />
<br />
I actually needed to experiment a bit with different recipes for the different areas of the model. So I'm not going over all the steps I took to arrive at the end, but I will outline the recipe I'll follow for the other models in this guy's squad (and possibly army?).<br />

<br />
Continuing on with my last three Panzer IVs. Yesterday I airbrushed the camo onto them.<br />
After a bit of a fight with my airbrush (which, as usual, came down to a proper cleaning of the airbrush) I got the paint down.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>The camo pattern I used this time was a bit more erratic than the first two I did. I just want to try if the more regular pattern or the more eccentric pattern is better.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O_I3ufJ_zXY/UosuxkT01tI/AAAAAAAAIlg/BZ5wBRyP3-M/s1600/IMG_20131118_190324.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O_I3ufJ_zXY/UosuxkT01tI/AAAAAAAAIlg/BZ5wBRyP3-M/s1600/IMG_20131118_190324.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Above are the old ones at the same painting stage as the new ones below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-shuLyYBPPMs/UvIdDzACPPI/AAAAAAAAJW0/J4aONfNR1L0/s1600/IMG_20140204_202355.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-shuLyYBPPMs/UvIdDzACPPI/AAAAAAAAJW0/J4aONfNR1L0/s1600/IMG_20140204_202355.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
So what do you think? Do you prefer the regular or erratic patterning of the camo?<br />
<br />
I know one thing: painting 3-tone Panzer camo with an airbrush is a breeze (pun intended).<br />
<br />

<br />
Howdy folks!<br />
<br />
It's been 2 months and a couple of days since my last post. I've been busy with a new hobby (and starting up a new blog: <a href="http://action-air.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Action air</a>) but now I'm back. Updates won't be as frequent as before, but I'm getting my mojo back so I'm back!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SIJHOsUdWzc/UpXqYkGByTI/AAAAAAAAItU/oxxXh7Oi3Ko/s1600/IMG_20131126_210146.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SIJHOsUdWzc/UpXqYkGByTI/AAAAAAAAItU/oxxXh7Oi3Ko/s1600/IMG_20131126_210146.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
As you might remember from my <a href="http://wtoatw.blogspot.be/2013/11/15mm-ww2-panzer-iv-ausf-h-detailing.html" target="_blank">previous post</a>, I painted up 2 of my 5 15mm Panzer IV Hs.<br />
<br />
Last night I decided to go ahead and basecoat the remaining three in my 'dunkelgelb' alternative: Dead Flesh.<br />
<br />
After getting reaquainted with my airbrush and compressor setup and some paint-thinning extravaganza (and airbrush-cleaning extravaganza as well), I could go ahead with the spraying itself.<br />
<br />
This is the result (drum roll...):<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HZ4PNj1LMaI/UuvEvOixNoI/AAAAAAAAJVo/QHuuHa1QAu4/s1600/IMG_20140130_205310.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HZ4PNj1LMaI/UuvEvOixNoI/AAAAAAAAJVo/QHuuHa1QAu4/s1600/IMG_20140130_205310.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Quite underwhelming, I know. But hey, a guy's gotta (re-)start somewhere, right?<br />
<br />
<span style="color: red;"><b>Sorry for the two-month outage... but I'm back! <br />
After getting a good drybrush to bring out all the details on the model, it was time the details got some love.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Rv5BNHezyiY/UpXmJsK9QwI/AAAAAAAAIs8/ynKTV9h9nEg/s1600/IMG_20131126_210112.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Rv5BNHezyiY/UpXmJsK9QwI/AAAAAAAAIs8/ynKTV9h9nEg/s640/IMG_20131126_210112.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I started off with giving the (spare) roadwheels some black paint where they're supposed to be rubberized. I also gave the canisters of fuel a red coat of paint, shaded with a sepia wash.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PxjDwEHsawY/UpXmYJwJv5I/AAAAAAAAItE/FJBCAufqfpQ/s1600/IMG_20131126_210139.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PxjDwEHsawY/UpXmYJwJv5I/AAAAAAAAItE/FJBCAufqfpQ/s640/IMG_20131126_210139.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
To top things off, I went over some of the models' edges with a lead pencil, showing wear and tear to the paintjob in patches and scratches.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SIJHOsUdWzc/UpXqYkGByTI/AAAAAAAAItQ/g8DyqukQY24/s1600/IMG_20131126_210146.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SIJHOsUdWzc/UpXqYkGByTI/AAAAAAAAItQ/g8DyqukQY24/s640/IMG_20131126_210146.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<br />
Next up is mud!<br />
<br />
Now, where to find a tutorial on 15mm mud...<br />
<br />
<b style="color: red;">
What do you guys think?</b>Cheatahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05635052902008247591noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8534108233084050071.post-76335658470758603262013-11-26T10:53:00.002+01:002013-11-26T10:53:24.129+01:0015mm WW2: Panzer IV ausf. H - Drybrush and metals<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o9LKb6RD3uw/Uo9SAfgdBII/AAAAAAAAIok/6pL7WSTH2Hc/s1600/IMG_20131121_222240.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o9LKb6RD3uw/Uo9SAfgdBII/AAAAAAAAIok/6pL7WSTH2Hc/s640/IMG_20131121_222240.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
So, after the filter or wash or whatever you want to call it, the overall color of the camo looked good. Now it was time to apply a drybrush to bring out the details and start the weathering of the tanks.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IIYZ-034Plk/UpRsUA7x1iI/AAAAAAAAIrI/5Ae7ePg8Irc/s1600/IMG_20131125_202214.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IIYZ-034Plk/UpRsUA7x1iI/AAAAAAAAIrI/5Ae7ePg8Irc/s640/IMG_20131125_202214.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
After the drybrush using the base yellow color, the definition of the details really pops. Also, it's a start to giving these guys a dusty, worn look.<br />
<br />
Next up were the metals. These included the exhaust system on the back and the tracks. I'm not sure the tracks on panzer iv were made entirely of metal (can someone answer this in the comments?) but painting them in metal seemed like the right thing to do.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FActgQfY9aY/UpRuGG3-BBI/AAAAAAAAIrU/pRNChPP9CJ4/s1600/IMG_20131125_210848.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FActgQfY9aY/UpRuGG3-BBI/AAAAAAAAIrU/pRNChPP9CJ4/s640/IMG_20131125_210848.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lydRmkpzOxE/UpRuNSp5yFI/AAAAAAAAIrc/0oDfn4w8p2Q/s1600/IMG_20131125_210837.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lydRmkpzOxE/UpRuNSp5yFI/AAAAAAAAIrc/0oDfn4w8p2Q/s640/IMG_20131125_210837.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I don't have the best picture of the tracks, but they're painted basic gun metal and a mix of black and red-brown wash was added over the top, making them look rusty/dirty.<br />
Also, note the bow machinegun was done in metal as well.<br />
<br />
Next steps:<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>detailing (road wheels, fuel canisters, ...)</li>
<li>chipping</li>
<li>muddy-ing</li>
</ol>
<div>
Step 1 will certainly be done. 2 and 3 are currently being considered. The models will look good without the extra effort of chips and mud, but it does give an extra dimension. Some personality, one might say.</div>
<br />
<br />
<b style="color: red;">
What do you think? Are the chipping and the addition of mud worth the extra effort? Do you have any good tutorials on how to achieve these effects?</b>Cheatahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05635052902008247591noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8534108233084050071.post-1949833898899276752013-11-22T13:52:00.000+01:002013-11-22T13:52:31.349+01:0015mm WW2: Panzer IV ausf. H - Continued<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O_I3ufJ_zXY/UosuxkT01tI/AAAAAAAAIlg/BZ5wBRyP3-M/s1600/IMG_20131118_190324.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O_I3ufJ_zXY/UosuxkT01tI/AAAAAAAAIlg/BZ5wBRyP3-M/s640/IMG_20131118_190324.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
As pointed out by myself and some astute readers, the colors are a bit on the bright side to be camo.<br />
Actually I anticipated this in my use of a very light yellow color whereas the base color of late war panzers is <i>dunkelgelb, </i>aka dark yellow.<br />
<br />
That's why I planned from the beginning to add a wash of vallejo sepia. After reading up on what filters are (in a model painting context) I decided to just go ahead with the wash, but in a thinned down version. This should have the same effect as a filter, with the added benefit that I didn't have to buy yet another modeling supply ;)<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>So, after a bit of experimenting, I got the wash to a suitable consistency and this is what came out:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uGEnw36KVNc/Uo9RaPkzOTI/AAAAAAAAIoY/6oQ-LJWHHXs/s1600/IMG_20131121_195728.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uGEnw36KVNc/Uo9RaPkzOTI/AAAAAAAAIoY/6oQ-LJWHHXs/s640/IMG_20131121_195728.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Don't mind the blotchy parts... it looks like weathering ;)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o9LKb6RD3uw/Uo9SAfgdBII/AAAAAAAAIog/8UhJLQskURI/s1600/IMG_20131121_222240.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o9LKb6RD3uw/Uo9SAfgdBII/AAAAAAAAIog/8UhJLQskURI/s640/IMG_20131121_222240.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Brothers panzer in full livery...</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
This is starting to look like it should... also note I swapped around the turrets as I got the comment that the bands on hull and turret matched up and that it looked odd, so I switched them to not make the bands line up... to me, it seems better that the bands match... what do you guys think?<br />
<br />
Anyway, next up is weathering, with a drybrush of the base yellow color I used, to show wear and tear. After that, tracks, wheels and details.<br />
<br />
... now I need to find some decals... but to do that, I'll need to figure out what division they belong to... any hints?<br />
<br />

H - Airbrush camo<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BtGAEh2M4h4/Uosr7L4SP3I/AAAAAAAAIlA/K1Ehgd8QlD0/s1600/20131021_195954.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BtGAEh2M4h4/Uosr7L4SP3I/AAAAAAAAIlA/K1Ehgd8QlD0/s640/20131021_195954.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm taking a break from 40k and I'm now foraying into the world of 15mm WW2 models. As I've said before, this is a quite natural evolution as I play World of Tanks and have a general interest in all things concerning the development of new technologies. And believe it or not, but war has been the best catalyst for the development of technology.<br />
<br />
So I know this might be a bit morbid, but I have a serious interest in how weapons work, how they have evolved over the course of history and the tactics behind deploying them.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>I decided to add the schürzen to the panzers. This makes them ausf. H and gives me the ability to field them late-war (not that that matters much in terms of gameplay, but the history-novice inside me needs this).<br />
<br />
Apparently, I don't have pictures of a grey-plastic panzer with schürzen, so on with the painting pics then:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-etszFRSfJoY/UosskjR018I/AAAAAAAAIlI/QvU34jUQu-Y/s1600/IMG_20131112_195452.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-etszFRSfJoY/UosskjR018I/AAAAAAAAIlI/QvU34jUQu-Y/s640/IMG_20131112_195452.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
As you could've guessed, I stuck the turrets on a spare flying stand so I can pick them up without touching the actual painted model and undercoated them black with my airbrush.<br />
<br />
Just to get a feel of how they paint I decided to paint up two of them for starters. So those two I gave a coat of dead flesh paint (it's the closest to dunkelgelb I have right now as I've not yet bought panzer-specific paints).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f1sU7GK9gVI/UostRTT2yQI/AAAAAAAAIlQ/FmRoY0cCV5s/s1600/IMG_20131112_202156.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f1sU7GK9gVI/UostRTT2yQI/AAAAAAAAIlQ/FmRoY0cCV5s/s640/IMG_20131112_202156.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
Considering they will get a wash of sepia at some point in time, I think the yellow turned out well. This was then abandoned for about a week but yesterday I had the courage to try a camo scheme on them using my airbrush.<br />
<br />
Late war german panzers were usually painted using the same 3 colors: yellow, green and brown. However, the camo pattern used was not standardized at all. The green and brown paint was usually applied in the field by their crew over the yellow basecoat they came with from the factory. That's why you see all kinds of different camo schemes.<br />
<br />
As I wanted to apply it with my airbrush and 15mm models are small, I opted for broad bands of alternating colors.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O_I3ufJ_zXY/UosuxkT01tI/AAAAAAAAIlc/A7hUiyqoR9w/s1600/IMG_20131118_190324.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O_I3ufJ_zXY/UosuxkT01tI/AAAAAAAAIlc/A7hUiyqoR9w/s640/IMG_20131118_190324.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Overall, I like how it looks, even though the green is somewhat too bright. I'm hoping the (to be added) sepia wash will tone it down along with the yellow. The brown looks good as it is.<br />
<br />
Next steps:<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>Sepia wash</li>
<li>Yellow weathering drybrush</li>
<li>Detailing</li>
<li>Decals</li>
</ol>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cturK-CKvGY/Um4vrx8LlnI/AAAAAAAAIDM/cgnoK4s97Lc/s1600/20131025_202238.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cturK-CKvGY/Um4vrx8LlnI/AAAAAAAAIDM/cgnoK4s97Lc/s640/20131025_202238.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It was that time again... time for a brawl... time for a fight...<br />
<br />
You can see my Tau deployed across the table, with Longstrike's hammerhead in the left corner, accompanied by 5 pathfinders and 2 broadsides with heavy rail rifles and 2 missile drones. Next to the building they are standing on is a devilfish with a unit of firewarriors inside. The riptide is smack in the middle of my deployment zone, ready to engage targets on either flank.<br />
<br />
Occupying the Aegis defence line are two squads of firewarriors, the left-most is joined by the fireblade. Behind the bastion are the two crisis suits with dual missile pods.<br />
<br />
Reserve forces are comprised of 10 Kroot with sniper rounds and a squad of Stealth suits.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yDNyhtHW1vg/Um5cRBYguvI/AAAAAAAAIDc/iap2TKZL_uc/s1600/20131025_202220.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yDNyhtHW1vg/Um5cRBYguvI/AAAAAAAAIDc/iap2TKZL_uc/s640/20131025_202220.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Tyranid forces surged forwards as soon as the game began.<br />
There's a 20 critter strong squad of gargoyles accompanying a completely hidden winged hive tyrant in the big ruin on the left. Behind them are a mama Tervigon with 10 of her babies. On the Tyranid left flank is a brood of 3 hive guard and another 10 termagaunts.<br />
<br />
Tyranid reinforcements consist of an outflanking Tervigon, a podding Doom of Malantai (insert some ' in the name) and a podding brood of 20 devilgaunts.<br />
<br />
After the initial Tyranid surge forwards, the gargoyle brood got wiped out by an entire army's worth of shooting. Tyranid reinforcements popped up behind my line, as they tend to do, but apparently, the devilgaunt brood took a wrong turn somewhere and didn't arrive with the others.<br />
<br />
After an extra Tau shooting phase in the Tyranid turn (which was completely uneventful), the Doom spelled doom for my forces and started racking up the wounds on both firewarriors squads. Also, the Pathfinders on the bastion were wiped out.<br />
<br />
With the Tyrant landing behind my lines as well, things were looking grim for my Tau. The Riptide tried to use his Nova reactor to bail but failed and took a wound. The other quads also tried to get out of harms way, but there were too many Tyranids nearby so eventually, both Firewarrior squads, the Fireblade and the crisis squad succumbed to Tyranid mind games, fire and assault.<br />
<br />
My reinforcements arrived behind the Tyranid lines to try to cause as much havoc as possible, hopefully securing the rearmost objective. Despite a valiant effort, even destroying the initial squad of Termagaunts, the Tervigon and podding devilgaunts proved too much for the Stealth squad and Kroot.<br />
<br />
I finally managed to kill the Tyrant, but had to give up any hopes of keeping my left flank objective, leaving the Tervigon with 3 squads of her babies to capture the objective.<br />
<br />
Going into the final phase of the battle, the Tyranids had their claws on 3 of the objectives while my remaining forces (Longstrike, Riptide, Broadsides and a couple of firewarriors and pathfinders) occupied a fortified position (and objective) near the right flank of what remained of my firebase.<br />
<br />
After withering some more fire from the encroaching Tyranids and with a bit of luck, I managed to shoot the occupying termagaunts off of 2 objectives, snatching a (slightly undeserved) draw out of the jaws of defeat. Had the battle lasted for another turn, or a scatter dice pointed in another direction, I would've been defeated.<br />
<br />
Final tally:<br />
Tau: 1 objective, First blood, Slay the Warlord<br />
Tyranids: 1 objective, Slay the Warlord, Linebreaker<br />
<br />
<b style="color: red;">
After all, another enjoyable battle</b>Cheatahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05635052902008247591noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8534108233084050071.post-45610088040137939512013-10-22T14:38:00.001+02:002013-10-22T14:38:15.828+02:00And now for something completely different... 15mm WW2<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.wallpapersdb.org/wallpapers/tanks/tiger_iv_panzer_1920x1440.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://www.wallpapersdb.org/wallpapers/tanks/tiger_iv_panzer_1920x1440.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Finishing my Tau Riptide, I decided on buying the next step for my army. Unfortunately, this isn't very exciting as I just need more Firewarriors to field. So I ordered a box of Firewarriors.<br />
<br />
Also, I've been ogling Flames of War and especially the minis, as these are great copies of the tanks seen in World of Tanks (well duh, they are after all historical WW2 tanks). So I bit the bullet and bought a box of 5 15mm Panzer IVs from Plastic Soldier Company.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
Without further ado, here's the fruit of my effort sticking the first of the Panzers (an Ausf. G) together:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PzHMzWF94lo/UmZjEtwopsI/AAAAAAAAH3o/UdbENopYdGc/s1600/20131021_195954.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PzHMzWF94lo/UmZjEtwopsI/AAAAAAAAH3o/UdbENopYdGc/s640/20131021_195954.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The turret fits snugly with a peg into the hull, letting you turn the turret without the chance to accidentally knock it off. Even so, I fitted a 5 eurocent coin in the hull (it's just big enough, I didn't even have to glue it in) and a rare earth magnet in the turret peg for the added magnetisation bonus. (aka it wasn't necessary, but it works)<br />
<br />
The hull and turret went together like a dream but the tracks both snapped in one place... probably due to my clumsy fingers as these bits are quite fiddly for a 28mm modeler ;-)<br />
They were easily fixed by a drop of superglue. All in all, most of it went together without a hitch.<br />
<br />
Ok, so I missed a couple of things... the basket with extra roadwheels at the side haven't been added yet, the piece of track at the front isn't stuck on and I still have some kind of double canister bit that I can't find a home for on the model...<br />
<br />
UPDATE: after some googling, I found out the canister bit are the air filters of the Ausf. H which should go on the right side of the hull... I'll check that out if I build an Ausf. H.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kfak3M9JFz8/UmZvH5RBztI/AAAAAAAAH34/Cgmyq9EyYzE/s1600/20131021_200024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kfak3M9JFz8/UmZvH5RBztI/AAAAAAAAH34/Cgmyq9EyYzE/s640/20131021_200024.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
A shot with the box. There are 4 more models inside, so a lot of bang for your buck, considering that you need about 10 tanks for a medium sized Flames of War battle.<br />
<br />
Also, I built 4 of the firewarriors, so maybe I can get an extra squad ready for the battle I planned this friday!<br />

<br />
It's been a while since I posted a "State of the army" article. <a href="http://wtoatw.blogspot.com/2013/06/tau-state-of-army.html" target="_blank">Last time</a> was 4 months ago. I can't believe time goes as fast as it does.<br />
<br />
I admit, the summer months were slow when it came to hobby-ing. More time is spent outdoors on other activities and going on vacation.<br />
<br />
So, doing a quick calculation with the numbers I used in the last article, in June I had painted up about 460 pts worth of models. In the 4 months time since last article, I finished my Devilfish (+/-100 pts) and 2 gun drones (I'm not counting pts for those), 4 Kroot (28 pts) got painted and my Riptide was done yesterday (190 pts) giving me a grand total of 318 pts painted in 4 months... that doesn't sound like a lot, but considering the time I actually spent on painting these (Kroot needed a brand new painting scheme so I had to smik that and the Riptide is the first giant model I have done), I think that's quite alright.<br />
<br />
Incidently, exactly 6 months have passed since I rebooted my Tau army (I started off on April 16th with <a href="http://wtoatw.blogspot.be/2013/04/concept-tau-firewarrior.html" target="_blank">Shas'la S'mik</a>). So in 6 months time I painted 778 pts worth of models, which is not bad, considering my track record before this army ;)<br />
<br />
After the break, a breakdown of the models I have, what is painted and what is planned... also... some army shots.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Stuff that is finished:<br />
<ul>
<li>11 Firewarriors</li>
<li>3 XV25s (stealth suits)</li>
<li>2 XV8s (crisis suits)</li>
<li>2 XV88s (old broadside suits)</li>
<li>4 Gun drones</li>
<li>Marker drone</li>
<li>Devilfish</li>
<li>Riptide</li>
<li>4 Kroot</li>
</ul>
<div>
<div>
Stuff that is standing around, gathering dust:</div>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Weapons for my XV8s!!</li>
<li>6 Kroot</li>
<li>10 Pathfinders</li>
<li>Fireblade</li>
</ul>
<div>
Stuff that needs stripping:</div>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Hammerhead</li>
<li>2 Gun drones</li>
<li>2 Kroot Smik</li>
<li>1 Firewarrior Smik</li>
</ul>
</div>
<br />
Stuff that needs buying to form an army:<br />
<ul>
<li>20 (or so) Firewarriors</li>
<li>Some other stuff maybe...</li>
</ul>
And now for some army shots. I tried to enhance my photography by using a white surface and background, but the lighting was just crap and I had no idea to get it better with the equipment on hand so I just proceeded taking crappy army pictures :(<br />

<br />
You remember this guy, right?<br />
<br />
Well, I decided to add some decals to the model, just to make it stand out some more.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
To do this and make it look good, I opted to go out and buy some Vallejo decal fix and decal medium. (These products should have the same effect as Micro Set and Micro Sol, but they're apparently cheaper.) I added <a href="http://wtoatw.blogspot.be/2013/07/it-was-not-done-now-its-done.html" target="_blank">decals to my devilfish</a> as well, and I really liked the look of it, except the transparent film is still visible.<br />
<br />
Decal fix makes sure the decal sticks better to the surface of the model and Decal medium dissolves the transparent film the decal is composed of, leaving only the colored bits of the decal visible "for that painted-on effect".<br />
(I also bought some masking tape to aid in airbrush adventures, some brushes, gloss varnish and a new pot of CA glue.)<br />
<br />
Now check out the model after the decalling... (don't mind the base, still working on it... also, I did some more white markings)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TRG8CqFaq9I/UlJ4Jj9zZTI/AAAAAAAAHtc/VQmWC4I-zsw/s1600/20131007_071818.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TRG8CqFaq9I/UlJ4Jj9zZTI/AAAAAAAAHtc/VQmWC4I-zsw/s640/20131007_071818.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1inbbaQmIx0/UlJ4bhBI2-I/AAAAAAAAHtk/J2DEXIFqi3k/s1600/20131007_071825.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1inbbaQmIx0/UlJ4bhBI2-I/AAAAAAAAHtk/J2DEXIFqi3k/s640/20131007_071825.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--ZRDfhdhOtQ/UlJ4fRhcRmI/AAAAAAAAHts/wQhkSWWVKxU/s1600/20131007_071831.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--ZRDfhdhOtQ/UlJ4fRhcRmI/AAAAAAAAHts/wQhkSWWVKxU/s640/20131007_071831.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
These decals really give me the opportunity to add an extra level of details to my (bigger) models without trying to freehand fiddly stuff like that... I have shaky hands and the freehanding usually gets screwed up, leaving me with an icky model or more work retouching the original paint work.<br />
<br />
And yes, I know my photographing skills suck...<br />
<br />

<br />
Last picture of previous update, as per usual.<br />
<br />
Yesterday I continued work on the model and I'm really enjoying the painting, so a pretty big update after the break!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>First thing I did was shade the shiny bits with a Sepia wash.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BO9gV-bDrTQ/UkvKAMPhlhI/AAAAAAAAHrg/ED3OBRVNUi4/s1600/20131001_192610.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BO9gV-bDrTQ/UkvKAMPhlhI/AAAAAAAAHrg/ED3OBRVNUi4/s640/20131001_192610.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For the more astute readers among you, yes, apparently I don't have pictures of just this step, so the next step is also visible: layering the parts that need to be white in Stonewall Gray.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A0kk2TbcL_I/UkvLF40PJ8I/AAAAAAAAHrs/PDg85JNWEeo/s1600/20131001_192602.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A0kk2TbcL_I/UkvLF40PJ8I/AAAAAAAAHrs/PDg85JNWEeo/s640/20131001_192602.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
After playing some World of Tanks, I couldn't help myself and I also did the white highlighting on the "white" parts and the gold highlight on the shiny bits.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-n3qB6cv1PQk/UkvUK6z3J2I/AAAAAAAAHr8/lT9SVsLAOFI/s1600/20131001_205720.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-n3qB6cv1PQk/UkvUK6z3J2I/AAAAAAAAHr8/lT9SVsLAOFI/s640/20131001_205720.jpg" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">And here the shiny bits aren't visible... I need to start making relevant pictures :p</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QqBlN6vFiIc/UkvUXJrE2xI/AAAAAAAAHsE/x_V2gYgFg_M/s1600/20131001_212416.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QqBlN6vFiIc/UkvUXJrE2xI/AAAAAAAAHsE/x_V2gYgFg_M/s640/20131001_212416.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
As I was on a roll, I decided to also do all the lenses. Eye lenses, lense-like thingies on the engines and the big lense on the gun.<br />
<br />
Todo list:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Markings (possibly with decals, will need to buy some decal medium)</li>
<li>Shield effect (will need to buy some gloss varnish)</li>
<li>Basing</li>
</ul>
<br />

<br />
This is where I left off... the washes needed to dry, so that's what happened and last saturday, I put in another hour or so of painting. Read all about it after the break!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FywuIhW7etQ/Ukkn3OlauZI/AAAAAAAAHpU/dOXF9_60GXA/s1600/20130928_154205.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FywuIhW7etQ/Ukkn3OlauZI/AAAAAAAAHpU/dOXF9_60GXA/s640/20130928_154205.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
The mechanical bits got a wash of watered down black ink giving a much better "highlighted black" look to these parts.<br />
Hmm I thought this picture was only of the black wash stage, but apparently, the next stage was already done when I took this picture... can you spot the other work I did?<br />
<br />
...<br />
<br />
<br />
...<br />
<br />
<br />
...<br />
<br />
<br />
...<br />
<br />
<br />
Either way, I have more pictures which make this a lot more clear ;-)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QV24tLG2m3Y/UkkoxIOdmaI/AAAAAAAAHpg/CqwvGMa2qf4/s1600/20130928_154157.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QV24tLG2m3Y/UkkoxIOdmaI/AAAAAAAAHpg/CqwvGMa2qf4/s640/20130928_154157.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The shiny bits got their first coat of shiny paint. They still need a sepia wash to deepen the color and after that, the obligatory highlight(s).<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uBAvlueNXB8/Ukk3LUbwJmI/AAAAAAAAHpw/SNg3tfLrpio/s1600/20130928_154148.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uBAvlueNXB8/Ukk3LUbwJmI/AAAAAAAAHpw/SNg3tfLrpio/s640/20130928_154148.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br />And the other side...</div>
<div>
<br /><b style="color: red;">More soon!</b></div>

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wfqrxoQh7sY/UjiQahCM8fI/AAAAAAAAHkA/JBZi66V5vE0/s1600/20130916_211959.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wfqrxoQh7sY/UjiQahCM8fI/AAAAAAAAHkA/JBZi66V5vE0/s640/20130916_211959.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I know this picture is obscure, but the astute observer immediately notices this is a Riptide (well duh).<br />
<br />
As the background is most obviously my painting desk, this must mean the Riptide is on my painting desk... and what do people do at painting desks? Among other things, they paint!<br />
<br />
So that must mean... *gasp* ...that I'm painting my Riptide!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>As usual, I started out with a black primer, applied with an airbrush. The gun is magnetized and pinned, so it can easily be removed from the arm. The torso is not glued to the legs, meaning the entire model comes apart in 3 pieces, which makes it easier to paint.<br />
<br />
So, after the primer, I applied a monochrome highlight using my tested method of drybrushing Vallejo Game Color Stonewall Grey. I try to make the highlights look natural, meaning I drybrush more heavily on the top of the model than near the base.<br />
<br />
This is the result:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UHauiV3sicM/UkE2vbh0tTI/AAAAAAAAHnU/_4uW_tb_5dI/s1600/20130923_192625.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UHauiV3sicM/UkE2vbh0tTI/AAAAAAAAHnU/_4uW_tb_5dI/s640/20130923_192625.jpg" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bad photography without flash...</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Nk_LbyPnIDE/UkE21ZgzA1I/AAAAAAAAHnc/wuC5MDoud9c/s1600/20130923_192631.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Nk_LbyPnIDE/UkE21ZgzA1I/AAAAAAAAHnc/wuC5MDoud9c/s640/20130923_192631.jpg" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bad photography with flash... I don't know which is worse, but the one with flash shows more clearly the monochrome highlights result while the one without flash shows more clearly how the model will eventually look in normal circumstances.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Having defined the highlights (I also did the bits and pieces on the base) I continued with my proven painting scheme by applying a liberal wash of Purple Vallejo Game Ink (which you can see in the background of the above pictures) on the armor plating.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T3xw3U3Ma68/UkE5QK2Bn_I/AAAAAAAAHno/zGPD2vJZkmk/s1600/20130923_200722.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T3xw3U3Ma68/UkE5QK2Bn_I/AAAAAAAAHno/zGPD2vJZkmk/s640/20130923_200722.jpg" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">After one wash...</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
After the first wash I need to let it dry completely, giving me the time to play a couple of battles of World of Tanks... experience doesn't come easy you know...<br />
<br />
Let an hour pass, then continue painting! So the next coat of wash is applied. I apply the purple ink without thinning. I need it to give a nice coverage, that's also why I apply two coats. This gives me a nice deep color without looking like a wash applied over a drybrush :p<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hkThhmC6x8g/UkE6gOvkkHI/AAAAAAAAHnw/VGBBw08R004/s1600/20130923_223456.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hkThhmC6x8g/UkE6gOvkkHI/AAAAAAAAHnw/VGBBw08R004/s640/20130923_223456.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>

<br />
That's where I'm at right now. Next up is giving the mechanical parts a watered down wash of black ink, painting the antennas and the guy's head in white and painting the round thingies in brass.<br />
<br />

<br />
As you can see here, I haven't been thinking about hobby-ing for about two weeks while I was at the Gorges du Verdon in France... well, that's actually a bit of a lie, as I've read about 4 Black Library books while I was there... enticing me to start some new armies:<br />
(in no particular order)<br />
- Eldar<br />
- Pre-heresy Thousand Sons<br />
- Flesh Tearers<br />
- Ultramarines (gasp!)<br />
<br />
They also prompted me to start again on my Dark Angels and Death Guard...<br />
<br />
Ah the lure of new (and/or existing) armies...<br />
<br />
I refuse to give in, so I'll continue work on my Tau, as you can see after the break!<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gIUSWxKqFxk/Ujhuc5jvtVI/AAAAAAAAHjk/4qu8jZWY4Kg/s1600/20130914_131838.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gIUSWxKqFxk/Ujhuc5jvtVI/AAAAAAAAHjk/4qu8jZWY4Kg/s640/20130914_131838.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You probably won't notice it, but I added some highlights and shades to the details like the piece of flesh, tassels hanging from the guns and the leather clothing. I also did the rifles completely, finishing this batch-o-kroot. They only need a coat of varnish at this stage and some grass.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EnrSkHqp8fs/Ujhu49b4XFI/AAAAAAAAHjs/rxhsDW8bcFo/s1600/20130917_080134.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EnrSkHqp8fs/Ujhu49b4XFI/AAAAAAAAHjs/rxhsDW8bcFo/s640/20130917_080134.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Which is what's added in this pic. I also varnished the gun drones and original Smikroot and gave them some plant life to walk on (or hover over).<br />
<br />
For my next picture... it's a teaser of what's to come...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wfqrxoQh7sY/UjiQahCM8fI/AAAAAAAAHj8/raCffb4pfww/s1600/20130916_211959.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wfqrxoQh7sY/UjiQahCM8fI/AAAAAAAAHj8/raCffb4pfww/s640/20130916_211959.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I finalized my Riptide model (adding the smart missile system and pinning the already magnetized ion accelerator) and undercoated it, ready to begin painting!<br />
<br />
And finally, another shot of the Gorges du Verdon... if you're ever nearby that place, at least drive by, it's gorgeous...<br />

<br />
Remember this guy?<br />
<br />
Time to get him some friends!<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>With the summer vacation nearing it's end and with it the good weather, I feel my Warhammer juju returning and decided to get cracking on the Kroot for which this little guy was the test subject (along with his brightly colored siblings which were freaks of nature and doomed to fail)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RWc7T322sFk/UhxqzWTu_LI/AAAAAAAAHG8/Gl8_mOQTafU/s1600/20130825_160418.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RWc7T322sFk/UhxqzWTu_LI/AAAAAAAAHG8/Gl8_mOQTafU/s640/20130825_160418.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Speeding things up, I decided to do these guys' bases along with the rest of the model, thus allowing me to coat the entire model in sepia wash instead of first the model, then afterwards the base.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hDZUs6mok9E/Uhxq6b4qTrI/AAAAAAAAHHE/TjHLWPHGlOA/s1600/20130825_162122.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hDZUs6mok9E/Uhxq6b4qTrI/AAAAAAAAHHE/TjHLWPHGlOA/s640/20130825_162122.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This is after the sepia wash. You can also see the 2 flying stands that get the same treatment. They are from the 2 gun drones that I finished this weekend as well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B5PPpAjM9Jo/UhxrrQcdDyI/AAAAAAAAHHM/apMF6xNAONo/s1600/20130825_161300.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B5PPpAjM9Jo/UhxrrQcdDyI/AAAAAAAAHHM/apMF6xNAONo/s400/20130825_161300.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
I was looking for an easy way to get a grip on my models while applying the wash, and this was the first idea I came up with. A while ago, I added metal washers to the bottom of my Tau Empire models' bases to give them a little more weight, which feels nice when handling them.<br />
An added benefit of the washers is that magnets stick to them, so I put a rare earth magnet in my hand drill (which isn't magnetic) and stuck it to the washer, allowing me to easily handle the model while washing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--bBvcg7QEDU/UhxsXsCDC7I/AAAAAAAAHHU/masI6t6XiUM/s1600/20130826_205811.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--bBvcg7QEDU/UhxsXsCDC7I/AAAAAAAAHHU/masI6t6XiUM/s640/20130826_205811.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Then last night, I had another idea... why not use multiple magnets to stick multiple models to a metal handle... enter 3 Kroot, 6 magnets and a metal spoon...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6NlSuxsqsXI/UhxsqLIWJwI/AAAAAAAAHHc/xK7SuExmqzk/s1600/20130826_205749.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6NlSuxsqsXI/UhxsqLIWJwI/AAAAAAAAHHc/xK7SuExmqzk/s640/20130826_205749.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
As you can see (if you try really hard :p) I did the highlights on the Kroot, the purple washes on the armor plates, the red eyes and I basecoated the metal and other red details. The only thing that needs further work is the metal, which needs a shade and highlights and the red details which also need shading and highlighting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ahdOenMzpck/UhxtJtf_4bI/AAAAAAAAHHk/pRP3Q4VSMi4/s1600/20130826_205803.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ahdOenMzpck/UhxtJtf_4bI/AAAAAAAAHHk/pRP3Q4VSMi4/s640/20130826_205803.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And yes, the models are thoroughly affixed to the spoon :D<br />
<br />
As a final bit of candy, here are the two finished gun drones:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HugGxN0H0K8/UhxtXrL5ZMI/AAAAAAAAHHs/Ow7djJ4n7RA/s1600/20130825_164332.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HugGxN0H0K8/UhxtXrL5ZMI/AAAAAAAAHHs/Ow7djJ4n7RA/s640/20130825_164332.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
All they need is a coat of varnish and some static grass added to their bases, but I'll do them together with the batch of Kroot, once they are finished.<br />
<br />
<b style="color: red;">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://visual.merriam-webster.com/images/arts-architecture/fine-arts/painting-drawing/airbrush_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="446" src="http://visual.merriam-webster.com/images/arts-architecture/fine-arts/painting-drawing/airbrush_2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So on saturday, Dries came over to my house for a tutorial on using an airbrush for painting models.<br />
I've had my airbrush for about a year now and to tell you the truth, it has been the best hobby-related investment ever. Yes, it requires a non-trivial amount of money to get going, but once you have a setup, things only get better, faster and easier.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
First thing I showed him is how to disassemble the airbrush and put it back together... I wish I had someone to show me this when I first started out using an airbrush. The first time I took it apart, I spent an hour trying to put it back together... not because it was that hard to do, but just making sure everything was in the right place and nothing got damaged.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1m4gA3xbYD4vn2cV7H1VprevFXIzI0cZJkJIB_vHm7H_cWHwkfVCBFdDDFrnQ2fAMRFmJrKcE86ETNDj-8nZjZTa65II7cEiV3JI3IB_35PUea6Jd5TgDlJgieIa_U17kbdccAuSvmnk/s200/IMG_3205.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1m4gA3xbYD4vn2cV7H1VprevFXIzI0cZJkJIB_vHm7H_cWHwkfVCBFdDDFrnQ2fAMRFmJrKcE86ETNDj-8nZjZTa65II7cEiV3JI3IB_35PUea6Jd5TgDlJgieIa_U17kbdccAuSvmnk/s400/IMG_3205.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Then came the first reason why every model painter should get an airbrush (imho) and that is the fact that you can prime your models indoors instead of waiting for the rain to stop, grabbing a bunch of models and spray painting them outside, then waiting for an hour to let them dry. With an airbrush, you can just grab even a single model and prime it then and there, waiting maybe 2 minutes for the undercoat to dry and then starting the painting process. Huzzah! Time efficiency.<br />
<br />
Oh yeah, I use Vallejo Surface Primer to prime my models. It goes straight from the bottle into the airbrush cup, no thinning needed (a good shaking is mandatory however).<br />
<a href="http://www.acrylicosvallejo.com/en_US/primers/family/22">http://www.acrylicosvallejo.com/en_US/primers/family/22</a><br />
<br />
Dries brought two already undercoated space marines, so we started of undercoating some Kroot. I did two as an example, then Dries took over and undercoated the third one. Instantly showing him the merits of undercoating as-you-go.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.dakkadakka.com/s/i/gallery/img/2011/4/11/208335_sm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="285" src="http://www.dakkadakka.com/s/i/gallery/img/2011/4/11/208335_sm.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Next step was to apply a zenithal highlight to the marines. This is something an airbrush is really good at. Spraying white paint on a black undercoat from the top of the model gives you the effect of the light shining on the top of the model and the effect gets less and less the more you go down to the base thus giving you a nice natural shading.<br />
<br />
We each did one marine, but in our zeal, we actually applied too much paint, so the "shade" near the base wasn't much of a shade. Anyway, this illustrated the technique of zenithal highlighting.<br />
<br />
Since Dries' marines may end up being Red Marines, we decided to try airbrushing red. I hadn't done this before and I was afraid the red wouldn't get a decent coverage and/or would clog the nozzle. But surprisingly, the Vallejo Game Color Gory Red and Bloody Red both went through the airbrush and onto the model without a hitch...<br />
<br />
We just did the red to show the basecoating and again, zenithal highlighting with a color... no pictures were taken.<br />
<br />
<b style="color: red;">
Dries was certainly very interested in buying an airbrush setup after my little tutorial.</b><br />

<br />
You all remember this guy, right?<br />
<br />
<br />
...<br />
<br />
<br />
RIGHT?<br />
<br />
Ok so, I did some more work on this concept Kroot dude and you can read all about it after the break...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-urRu6aEgeRQ/Ug09SyLsQPI/AAAAAAAAG9o/GLOPCyZp6ek/s1600/20130815_183314.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-urRu6aEgeRQ/Ug09SyLsQPI/AAAAAAAAG9o/GLOPCyZp6ek/s640/20130815_183314.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I re-metalled the rifle and added some highlights in silver.<br />
The eyes were done in red, as were the beads in his hair... spines... whatever those things on his head are.<br />
His clothing was done in leather-look (not the black studded night-club type... the medieval, improvised armor type)<br />
And I did the base.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s0Qhd2aGeTU/Ug09czyIVEI/AAAAAAAAG9w/zLD3E0AmoBc/s1600/20130815_183242.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s0Qhd2aGeTU/Ug09czyIVEI/AAAAAAAAG9w/zLD3E0AmoBc/s640/20130815_183242.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I kind of like the basic earthy colors used all over. They contrast well with the red in his eyes and hair-spine-beads and the purple of the shoulder pad and cloth wrapped around the gun.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pxkSbWUwcos/Ug09znk6KtI/AAAAAAAAG94/MEvMevze_PI/s1600/20130815_183250.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pxkSbWUwcos/Ug09znk6KtI/AAAAAAAAG94/MEvMevze_PI/s640/20130815_183250.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
So things that need doing:<br />
- coat of varnish<br />
- static grass<br />
- 9 (or 11 if I ever get to stripping the other 2 Smik subjects) of his buddies.<br />
<br />

<br />
Howdy folks.<br />
<br />
You might remember this picture up here... it has the Kroot guy with the clashing colors for his clothing.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I didn't like how the green and the purple worked together, so I decided to just paint his clothing brown, darker than his skin.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yLQbpR_nGRU/UgNJDqYH5PI/AAAAAAAAG7k/jeZiW2GRO90/s1600/20130807_220231.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yLQbpR_nGRU/UgNJDqYH5PI/AAAAAAAAG7k/jeZiW2GRO90/s640/20130807_220231.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Ok, so this picture's quality sucks monkey balls...<br />
At least you can see I put some work into highlighting the spines further, so they now stand out more.<br />
Also, the metal parts have had a drybrush of metal and a wash of sepia. They will receive metal and silver highlights.<br />
<br />
The brown clothes need a highlight and the entire model needs some spot color, probably red, used for the eyes, beads in the spines etc.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0IiIv0TqC6o/UgNiaf0c4DI/AAAAAAAAG70/EsRD8zzuPUM/s1600/20130807_220223.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0IiIv0TqC6o/UgNiaf0c4DI/AAAAAAAAG70/EsRD8zzuPUM/s640/20130807_220223.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I actually like how this guy is starting to look. Imagine these in a squad... oh yeah :D<br />
<br />
